"Every empire, however, tells itself and the world that it is unlike all other empires, that its mission is not to plunder and control but to educate and liberate." -- Edward W. Said |
In the early 1900's, Indians were suffering from British discrimination and ruling. The British controlled the Indians, much as they controlled the early United States and - also similar to the U.S. - taxed them with unfair amounts of money. The early 1900's were also troubled by both World War I and World War II. These war-torn times were dangerous and living as an Indian wasn't easy, especially for those who were shunned by society just for being from the "untouchable caste". There was no fair justice. There was not fair opportunity. The Indians needed a someone to save them, to bring them to the light. They needed a leader.
